Michael "Bomber" Browne, RIP

It is with great sadness that the club has learned of the recent passing of Past President, Michael "Bomber" Browne.

Bomber is a name known throughout Blackrock College RFC's history, and his contributions to the club are many. From his early days as a player where he was part of the winning Leinster Senior League team of 1974/1975, he also won an O'Connell Cup medal alongside his son (beating UCD in the final in Donnybrook) in 1981/1982.  

Upon retiring from playing, he soon found himself as the Club's First XV Coach for a number of years, where he had several achievements including he led the winning 1988 Leinster Senior Cup Team beside the late Brian McLoughlin, and captained by Alain Rolland. He also coached the team that won the Castle Trophy at the Centenary event, competed for by 80 teams from all 4 provinces. Eventually, Bomber became Club President for the 1996-1997 season. He was a well-known Club stalwart for many years, while he was also a prominent eye surgeon in South Dublin. 

More recently, in May 2025, Bomber and his brother, Noel, along with members from Noel's local rugby club, Swilers Rugby Club in Newfoundland Canada, visited Stradbrook for a friendly match between Blackrock and Swilers. Bomber was also warmly welcomed at some of the pre-match lunches last season. 

On behalf of Blackrock College RFC President, Mick Dwan, the Executive Committee, and all the Club Members, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Marion, and his children, Karen, Michael and Barry, as well as his family and close friends.
