Match Report: 1st XV v MU Barnhall
Saturday saw the return of Barnhall to Stradbrook for an Energia AIL competitive fixture after their hugely successful season 2025/26 saw them finish easily as outright and fully convincing winners of Div 2A with several match weeks to spare!
Both teams differed from the recent opening Leinster Senior League match that had also been played between these sides at Stradbrook just a few weeks ago.
Barnhall commenced the game with huge energy and determination and imposed themselves on the game very effectively forcing turnovers, some penalties to be conceded and uncharacteristic handling errors from our side.
Nonetheless our defence worked incredibly hard to somehow foil multiple Barnhall attacks during that first half which finished with a scoreline of just 0-5 after a well worked Barnhall break away resulted in a try from Neil Byrne, but their conversion was missed.
The try scorer was sent to the sin bin shortly after for an unfortunate high tackle just before the halftime break.
The second half started as all the home supporters had hoped the first half might have, with a superbly worked break away resulting in some excellent backline support running lines and slick passing for Daniel Squires to ultimately score in just the second minute.
Tim Corkery converted successfully and BCRFC took a narrow 7-5 lead.
What looked like the home side grabbing a real foothold was temporarily upset by a superb individual try by the Barnhall winger Conor Duggan. With the conversion attempt missed, Barnhall took a narrow 7-10 lead.
Despite a lot of positive play and it seemed much greater amount of possession than the first half, it was proving difficult to break down the Barnhall defence, until another lovely backline move was finished off by Thomas Quinn dotting down under the posts for Tim Corkery to once again convert and the home side moved to a 14-10 lead.
The majority of the remainder of the match saw the home side dominating possession and applying a lot of pressure. This was once again rewarded on 77 minutes when Captain James Burke crossed the whitewash to score and once again Tim Corkery converted successfully.
That was the last of the scores thanks notably to one incredible sprint back to successfully tackle by Inigo Cruise O'Brien on the Barnhall centre who had made a strong break near the end of the game.
So with thanks to that welcome intervention, the game finished up 21-10 and probably unfortunate to not have secured a 4 try bonus point, but very satisfied with the hard fought win, the 4 points, and the score difference that sees us in 2nd place on the table.
A tough away trip to the Mardyke awaits next as we face UCC Rugby on the Road on 3rd Oct at 14:30 and as ever, all support is welcome!
