A Blend of past, present and future Uganda Rugby Stars to take on Irish Blackrock in Kampala
Coach Kevin Makmot and the Uganda Allstars management named a strong 34 man squad to face the Irish Blackrock College RFC on the 16th of August, 2025 at Kyadondo Rugby Grounds.
The squad is a mixture of up and coming stars, the current 15s and 7s stars, as well as the stars some consider to be at the tail end of their rugby careers.
This has given an opportunity to some of the players who have been on the fringes of the Uganda Rugby Cranes set up to raise their hand against a strong Blackrock side, who play in the 2nd tier of Irish rugby.
The squad that is captained by Michael Wokorach has a big task ahead of it, which is reflected in the selections.
Explaining the criterion used to call up the players, Atibu Saidi, the lead in organizing the Irish Blackrock Tour in Uganda, explained this to a fan via social media platform X, formerly Twitter.
“It’s an All Stars team with a mix of young stars and All time Uganda Stars for Uganda… According to the standard of the visiting team, that team should have a fairly good match. Also selection was based on availability of players, clearance from Clubs and injury statu,” Mr. Atibu noted.
Some of the selections like the captains, in addition to young hooker Sylvester Munguacel, were already known as early as the launch of the tour, whereas the other selections come as a surprise, much to the satisfaction of the Ugandan fans.
Vice Captain Ivan Magomu, formerly the Captain of the Uganda Rugby Cranes, gets to represent Uganda once again, while the forgotten Cyrus Wathum, Asuman Mugerwa and Charles Uhuru Odongo make the Uganda squad once again.
Stephen Alul, fondly known as Buju, finally gets his place in a Uganda shirt, while promising prospects like Bave Okumu and Dennis Ofoyrwoth of the Kakira Simbas, and Ethan Mugabi of the Makerere Impis, get their chance to dance on the big stage.
Robin Odrua, Haruna Muhammad and Bob Kawanda in the backs, while KOBs’ duo of Andrew Odhiambo and Simon Makumbi, are joined by Allan Olango in the forwards as some of the players to get some game time for Uganda.
We have seen these players shine for their clubs, and most, for their country, but now it is time for the Irish Blackrock College RFC to experience what Ugandan rugby has to offer on and off the pitch.
