Blackrock College RFC 24 - 34 Dublin University
After their best performance of the season in Cork last weekend, Rock returned home for their final game of the season knowing that their status in Division 1B was secured for another season. With little to play for bar pride, finishing higher up the table and spoiling the visitors own quests at winning the title, an intriguing battle was in store.
It was clear from the opening who was out to make a point, Trinity landing two quick breakaway tries inside the opening 3 minutes to send a clear message up to Wesley that they would be taking care of their half of the bargain. It took Rock a while to wake up and the huge wind at their backs was proving to be more a hindrance than a help. Eventually they started to get gain line, and two big breaks from Alex Mullen culminated in a 5m tap penalty which the aforementioned duly finished himself. There was just enough time for Trinity to grab one more before half-time to take a 19-7 lead at the break. A slender enough lead which probably didn't tell the full story of the half.
The second half started in reverse fashion to the first, Alex Mullen completing a carbon copy of his first try with a 5m tap penalty but then Trinity hit back with another quick 1-2 sucker punch, Two fast tries took the score to 31-12. Scores up in Armagh meant Trinity's effort was to be in vain and all that was left for the two Dublin clubs was to play out the last ten minutes with free flowing rugby. Rock benefitted from this and scored twice, first from Darragh Farrell in the left corner and next a diving score in the shadows of the clubhouse for Jamie Rogan to round out the season. It wasn't to be today but a gallant fightback ensured their was respectability to the scoreline 34-24.
46 players donned the blue and white in the AIL this season, 10 of them under 20 years of age and 18 made their debut. The dressing room afterwards was a place to reflect on great memories for the squad over the past few seasons under the tutelage of James Blaney, whilst also bidding farewell to some players who have given their all for this club. It wouldn't be right for me to retire anyone in this post as situations may change over the Summer, but either way we look forward to welcoming each and everyone back to Stradbrook next September either on the pitch or behind the barrier. For me, it will be behind the barrier, many thanks to Mick Hearty and James Blaney for given me the opportunity to manage this great team for 3 seasons, thanks also to kit-men, coaches, physios and Doctors, your work as volunteers doesn't go unnoticed. Finally to the team, over the past 4 seasons we have beaten every team we played at least once, showing on our day we are as good as anyone in the league. With the blend of youth, experience and new signings I have no doubt 26/27 season will be the best yet.
Enjoy your Summer and see you in September.
