The Blackrock College RFC Gala Dinner brought together nearly 300 guests on Wednesday, 19th November, for an evening filled with excitement, fine dining, and generous fundraising. Held at the elegant Shelbourne Hotel, the Great Room was beautifully decorated, and the standout Christmas tree really captured the spirit of the festive season!
The event itself combined entertainment, rugby banter, and a spirited auction to support the rugby club’s future. Here’s a detailed look at the night’s memorable moments and key highlights.

A Magical Start with Shane Black
The evening began with a drinks reception where Shane Black, the renowned mentalist and psychological entertainer, amazed guests with his mind-reading skills. His close-up illusions and mental feats sparked curiosity and conversation, setting a lively tone for the night. Later, Shane took to the stage to orchestrate even more impressive demonstrations, leaving the audience both baffled and entertained. I think the entire audience gasped at THAT nose scratch!
Welcome Address by Mick Dwan
Blackrock College RFC President for 2025/2026, Mick Dwan, welcomed all guests and provided an overview of the latest developments at the Rugby Club. He highlighted the club's achievements, upcoming events, and initiatives aimed at fostering community engagement and promoting the sport of rugby at Club level.
Mick expressed gratitude to all members, players, sponsors and supporters for their continued commitment to the club, emphasizing the importance of unity and collaboration in achieving future goals.

Emcee Shane Byrne and the Heads or Tails Raffle
Shane Byrne, a rugby legend and familiar face in the Rock community, opened the formal part of the evening as the emcee. Shane's quick wit and familiarity with so many in the room, made the Heads or Tails raffle a highlight early in the program. Guests eagerly participated, enjoying the light-hearted competition and the chance to win Take That tickets. Congratulations to Johnny McGovern for his winning guess!

A Delicious Three-Course Dinner
The Shelbourne Hotel staff, dressed in their signature white jackets, expertly served a three-course dinner. The menu combined classic and contemporary dishes, carefully prepared to satisfy the diverse crowd.
Starting with the Surf Smoked Castletownbere Salmon with Pickled Red Onion, Lakeshore Mustard Emulsion; followed by the Main Course of Roasted Manor Farm Chicken complimented with Asparagus, Baby Carrot & Mushroom Tarragon Sauce. The savoury dishes were soon followed up with a sweet Chocolate Mousse & Orange Pot Cream Tart. The smooth service and elegant presentation added to the overall experience, allowing guests to relax and enjoy each other's company.
Auction Highlights and Generous Support
A major part of the Gala was the auction, skillfully led by our auctioneer Eamon O Flaherty, who transitioned from his day job as Managing Director of Sherry FitzGerald Brady O’Flaherty, one of Co Kildare’s leading estate agency firms. Eamon is a master at keeping the attention of all guests, with entertaining quips as he scans the audience for the highest bidders, and flies through the lots at a great pace. The auction successfully raised over €30,000- hugely significant funds for the Rugby Club, with two standout items capturing the crowd’s attention:
Wimbledon Debentures
Two tickets for Centre Court on Opening Day in June 2026.
Wimbledon Debentures
Two tickets for Centre Court on the Day of the Women’s Final in July 2026.
These exclusive experiences were generously donated by an anonymous benefactor, and their sale contributed greatly to the night’s success.
Thank you also to the Rock Women's Team volunteers, Libby O'Gorman, Ava Fannin, Kate Jordan and Anna Grace, who acted as spotters amongst the crowd.

Insightful Panel Speakers
The evening concluded with a panel discussion featuring Ian Madigan, Brent Pope, and Nigel Osbourne. Each speaker brought unique perspectives on rugby, and more specifically the Autumn International Series in anticipation of the final Irish fixture against South Africa. Their stories and debates were insightful and on topic- from who would start at 10 to the the hot topic of penalties and the recent Irish - New Zealand clash in Chicago.
Gratitude to Sponsors, Guests, and Contributors
The event's success depended on the support of many. Club members and corporate sponsors filled tables with enthusiastic guests, while numerous donors contributed auction items that added variety and excitement. The generosity of those who purchased auction items ensured that the fundraiser exceeded expectations, providing vital resources for the club’s future.
