AIL 2A Round 4
vs Queens University
Dub Lane
A hardy group of supporters made the journey north for our encounter with the league leaders.
The rain never let up from when we left Dublin, until we returned several hours later.
We were treated to a wonderful game of rugby, played in a most sporting manner by both sides.
The playing surface at Dub Lane is a mixture or grass and synthetic which, despite the weather, was in magnificent condition and held up all afternoon.
Rock kicked off, Queens centre knocked it on, leading to a Rock scrum.
We spent the first ten minutes in their half, however strong Queens defence stopped us getting over their line.
On eleven minutes and against the run of play, Queens scored a Try on their first visit to our half.
Converted.
7 : 0
From the restart, we hit back with Roghan McMahon scoring in the corner.
Kicker Quirke lined it up and split the posts.

7 : 7
From a penalty to us on 23 minutes, we opted for a line out, 10 metres out from their line.
Captain Liam McMahon dotted down in the corner, off the back of a maul.
Kicker, with rain coming from behind & across him sideways, once again showed his class and converted it from the sideline.
7 : 14
Within two minutes of the restart, Queens were on the attack deep inside our half.
Their No. 10 kicked a grubber towards the corner, which just went over the dead ball line before their winger could pounce on it.
A Queens knock on in the 34th minute led to the ref. playing advantage to us inside our own half.
Cian Reale swooped up the ball and made 30 metres.
The ball ended up with Kicker Quirke, who went in to score.
Kicker then attempted to convert his own Try from out wide.
His kick came back of the post.

Just before the break, we were awarded a penalty 10 metres out from the Queens line.
We opted to take a scrum, which led to Mattie Cosgrove going in to score our Bonus Point Try.
Difficult kick missed.

7 : 24
We started the second half the way we finished the first, with all the play in the Queens half of the pitch for the first ten minutes.
A penalty awarded to us on 51 minutes saw Kicker add to his tally for the afternoon.
7 : 27
With the rain getting heavier, the wind picking up and behind the home team, they started to get a foothold in the match.
They scored their second of the afternoon on 56 minutes.
Conversion attempt from out wide missed.
12 : 27
Queens went in again for a converted Try on 65 minutes.
19 : 27
Against the run of play, Queens No. 5, Whitten, intercepted a pass on half way and showed a serious turn of foot to score under the posts.
Bonus Point Try.
Converted.
26 : 27
A drop goal for Queens saw them take a two point lead with a couple of minutes left on the clock.
29 : 27
We had a scrum on our 22 with a minute to go.
We attacked on the front foot and an incredible effort from the entire team saw us get into range for a drop goal of our own.
After 23 phases of play, without a single mistake from forwards and backs alike, (incredible to believe in the conditions), Mark ‘Eddie’ Edwards threw a pass to James ‘Jesus’ Fennelly who kicked the drop goal for the win.
Jesus Saves…!
