John McDonnell Remembered

The 25th of October marks the 30th anniversary of the passing of John McDonnell. John was 25 years old and left far too early.

John joined Blackrock College RFC after school and was an accomplished back row forward who played on a number of club teams from U19s to Firsts.

He also went to New Zealand and played a season over there.

John was an extremely popular club member who had finished college and taken up employment in his chosen field.

Blackrock College RFC was in John’s blood as his father and siblings all played for the club.

His dad, Joe, is a member of Blackrock College RFC for the last 65 years and his sisters Gwen, Edwina and Vicki all played for Rock. Vicki was capped for Ireland.

It’s hard to believe that 30 years have passed since the car accident that took John’s life but is also highly appropriate that we remember someone who gave so much to us in his short time in the club and whose family still continue to be part of the club.

Rest easy, John.
