First XV v MU Barnhall Match Report

AIL 2A Round 14

vs MU Barnhall

25.02.2023 - Stradbrook

Considering the timing of the game, directly clashing with the Ireland Six Nations match in Rome, a good crowd turned up in Stradbrook to see this top-of-the-table tussle.

With points difference being the only thing separating the top two, all present knew we were in for a cracker.

Prior to the start, a moment's silence was observed following the recent passing of Pat Hooban, father of Rock Women's player Emma, and Tom Tierney, the former Irish International player and coach.

Barnhall got us underway kicking off toward the clubhouse and into a slight draught.

Ross Barron made it a fast start, getting in off the back of a maul for the opening try after only three minutes. Conversion attempt from out wide missed.

A penalty from Kicker Quirke a couple of minutes later extended our lead to eight, but back came Barnhall with two unconverted tries that put them on top by two.

8 : 10

On the half hour mark Mattie Cosgrove scored out wide from a well-worked training ground move and Kicker added the extras.

15 : 10

Within a minute of the restart Banrhall were in again to tie the game as their conversion attempt slid wide.

15 : 15

Mattie Cosgrove added his second try of the day just before the break, which Kicker converted to put us ahead.

In first half time added on, Mattie ‘Matt-Trick’ Cosgrove dotted down for his third try and we headed to the break with the try bonus point in the bag.

29 : 15

Straight from the kick-off for the second half, Chris ‘Rollers’ Rolland kicked (kneed) forward, regathered and ran in to score.

Conversion wide.

34 : 15

A piece of magic from James ‘Jesus’ Fennelly increased our lead on fifty-four minutes. He chipped over the top, swerved around the oncoming defender, regathered with one hand, flashed past the Barnhall full back and went in to score the try of the game.

Kicker slotted the extras.

41 : 15

A red card (second yellow) saw us down to fourteen men on the hour mark. Barnhall scored off the resultant penalty for their try bonus point.

They would go in again on seventy six minutes for a converted try.

41 : 29

A late penalty for us added another three points to our final total.

44 : 29
