Match Report: U20s V. St. Marys
St. Mary's College RFC 10 Blackrock 17
A frosty day in St Mary’s College RFC saw Blackrock u20’s run out 17-10 winners over a strong Mary’s side. Blackrock were looking for back to back wins in the league after winning impressively against Navan a fortnight ago. A slow start from Rock meant that they were jammed in their own 22 for the first 10 minutes of the game and they were punished as centre Myles Carey touched down in the corner to give Mary’s an early 5-0 lead with the conversion being missed.
Rock replied almost immediately, however, as scrum-half Adam Larmour broke through the Mary’s defence from a 5-metre scrum and dotted down under the posts to give Blackrock the lead with Peter O’Reilly slotting the conversion to make it 7-5. Continuous line breaks soon followed from Blackrock as they surged towards the Mary’s line once again. They gained themselves a penalty under the posts, which Peter O’Reilly converted to give them a 10-5 lead.
A wonderful solo effort from winger Michael Taaffe then pushed Rock further ahead with a brilliant chip and chase which gave them a 17-5 lead at halftime.
The 2nd half was mainly dominated by Mary’s as they looked for a fight back. They did get one score back through another brilliant effort by Myles Carey to make it 17-10, however, a huge defensive effort from Rock held Mary’s out especially in the dying moments as they ran very close to the line.
A brilliant win for Blackrock and they will look to go one further against Clontarf this weekend.
